Don’t Forget the Kitchen…
Preparing for special occasions or family gatherings can be a lot of work. Yet, they also provide a great excuse to have fun decorating your home. And while many of us are already planning to accent the dining room with a colorful table cloth and spruce up the living room with holiday or seasonal decorations, have you ever considered adding some excitement to your kitchen island or serving area? It’s definitely easy to overlook these areas as places to simply prepare or serve food, but at second glance, they may also have the potential to make a statement during your next gathering.
If you need something quick, you can incorporate some “no-time design” ideas that were mentioned in our last blog. Otherwise, read through the ideas below and consider incorporating some of these suggestions (and illustrations) into your design plan to enhance the look of your kitchen island or serving area.
First, think “unity of color” when decorating for any special occasion. Color and follow through are the keys to creating an inspiring look.
Next, take some large scale serving pieces and add either real or artificial greens with a splash of color and “viola!” You have a look you can pull off all winter long. (You can use this same concept for another season: add some of the Delft you collected or change the greens to twiggy leaves with bright ornament balls and you’re headed into spring!)
Consider large scale candle holders. They can create a great background for an island when serving buffet style or add visual interest to your dining room table.
Finally, think height. Food will give texture and color, but you need height to create presence. You can add a small bowl beneath a serving plate to give even more variations of height when setting up you buffet line. Tuck some more berry picks or artificial grasses (shown below) in and around the serving plates and you can gain even more color and texture.
Try something new when preparing for your next special gathering and dress up your home with one of these ideas. We mentioned these suggestions for the kitchen island or serving area but they’d also work for dining table décor or fit another area of your home. The sky’s the limit for what you can do. Just know that if you get stuck with an idea or need some inspiration, the doors are always open to chat with the designers at Vander Berg Furniture. Have fun decorating!
