Achieving A Cozy & Inviting Living Room
Some rooms have a way of drawing you in at first glance. They give off a comfortable, cozy feel and just make you feel at home. That’s what we all want for our living room, but how do you achieve that?
When our Designers work on a Living Room design, they ask questions that will send them in the right direction for YOUR space. If you’re wanting to make your Living Room more inviting and cozy, ask yourself these questions:
FUNCTION: What will the space be used for? Do you host a lot or have a big family where you need extra seating? Do you have little kids and you need storage space to hide toys? What do you use your living space for watching TV, reading, relaxing?
STYLE: What style are you aiming to achieve? Formal, traditional, timeless, modern, relaxed…..there’s no wrong answer to this question. Are there items you already have that you want to incorporate into the design? Family photos, special heirlooms, etc…..they can definitely be included in your fresh, new room!
TRAFFIC PATTERN: What is the easiest route to walk through the space to get to a different room, keeping easy access to doors & windows? It is best to give 30”-36” of a walkway between large furniture pieces (if your living room allows for it), if not then at least 18”-24” to avoid overcrowding.
FOCAL POINT: Is there a specific focal point in the room – that “thing” your eyes land on when you enter the space? A fireplace, TV, etc. will help determine the best placement of furniture pieces.
TEXTURE, COLORS & LAYERS:
Pillows are a great way to add texture and color to your room. Have fun with these since they’re easily changeable. Consider the style of your space when selecting patterns and textures.
Lamps add another layer of lighting. First consider your other light sources. Do you have ceiling lights or not? Is the function of the lamp to provide light or just ambiance? Does the space have a lot of natural light or not? This will determine what kind of lamps are needed.
Accessories & Art are a great way of adding pops of color. If you’re unsure of committing to color in your upholstery this is an easy way to add that without a huge investment and can easily be changed with the seasons or as your style changes.
